I made a set of salad bowls out of copper this way in high school. What you don't see is the wooden form behind the metal, the form is held in the chuck or on a face plate and the metal is pressed against it from the start.
Lots of things are still made by hand today by metal spinning.
Doesn't take any special kind of lathe, pretty much any metal lathe will work, and a heavy wood lathe can be used to do it also. Nice video, thanks Top!
