I found this model 68-2 at Las Vegas Antique Arms show. The model 68 was originally designed for California Highway Patrol. It is a model 66 frame with a model 67 cylinder The barrel extends a bit farther into the cylinder window as the model 67 cylinder is 38 special only and is shorter.
This gun is roll marked for Los Angeles Police Department and when I bought it it was wearing John Hurst grips.

Between 1977 and 1985 6000+ manufactured most going as duty weapons for California Highway Patrol. The L.A.P.D. gun were sort of a Commemorative but they could be used as duty revolvers. The L.A.P.D. guns came double action/single action from S&W and had to be altered to DA only for duty use. This one had been altered and carried.
