I wanna get y’all’s thoughts on a short barrel 30-06. I’ve check online and I’m not finding much info out there on barrels shorter than about 22”.

Really I’m looking at cutting down a 30-06 to 16” or 18” and know how significant of a loss of velocity will I get: more maneuverable and such. Anyone got some knowledge on this?

My real goal is a dangerous game defense gun and have been eyeing up a 1895 45-70 Guide gun. Lever actions seem to turn less heads in terms of “what does that guy intend to do with that gun” at campsites than most other rifles I feel (IE, the “forbidden black rifle”). Thoughts?

You can figure about 25ft per inch but most will stall at a certain length for a couple of inches.

That said why a 06? Why not a 308? 308 is a proven performer with short barrels better ammo to choose from ECT…

I already have a 30-06 (tryna sell it at the moment) but just making plans to make do in case it doesn’t sell.

I like the .308 and it’s definitely a contender (specifically in a Tavor 7 right now due to the compactness). But Tavor falls in the “tactical look” and I’m tryna ween away from that for now. Eventually I get one though.

Research the Morocco M1950 carbine. This was a Mauser rifle in .30-06 with a 17.5" barrel. They are a HOOT to shoot. Don't have anything flammable within 6' of the muzzle blast.

Oh! Very nice. I’ll have to look into that! Thank you.

18.5 12 gauge pump with slugs. Who gives a rats ass what gun you have in your tent/RV? BTW, you can get a pink shotgun just to make it less offensive. Also the 06 does better with a 22" barrel
I like the way you think! While I recognize I shouldn’t give a darn about what other people think, I like to recognize the thoughts of others within reason. I know it cools to be all bold and brash but what’s wrong with taken someone else’s thoughts into consideration?
I’ve been reading a 12 gauge with slugs is a good option. Pinkness aside, an all wood shotty wild probably fit the bill.

I cut down a 30-06 for a friend to about 16.5 inches. He shot it once and complained how low it shot. Granted it had no sights so how was he aiming? He loved it other wise and talked about what a great brush gun it will make. He thought over and over about how to get a scope on it or sights and after several years and weakening health I convinced him to sell it and move on.

Hey brother, 28 years born and raised Alaskan (mostly bush years at that)- you can’t beat a quality made 12 GA with quality slugs or a good lever gun in 45-70 for a camp gun/dangerous game gun. If money is no object or you have a bit more of the romantic side in you, a good 375HH or 458 win mag works great too. For a true camp/dangerous game gun for any occasion I prefer the 45-70 or 12 GA because the platforms these days accommodate flashlights better than bolt guns and seeing aggressors (2 or 4 legged) at night around camp while having the gun at the ready, is critical. I say sell the 06’ on gun broker if it doesn’t sell here and build your dream lever gun, bolt action 375/458 or 12 GA!

Remington 742 in 3006 was I believe 16-17 inches.
Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_Model_750

The 742/7400/750 were available in an 18.5 inch carbine chambered in 30.06. The series has been discontinued since 2015. The carbine was popular when I lived in the South because it was in all the gun stores. But with the old Remington now defunct I am not sure I would want an orphan except to add to a collection. For a working camp rifle as you describe I would prefer a Scout rifle in .308 with an Aimpoint on it. I agree that non-tactical appearances are important in today's world. Best wishes with your search. Enjoy.

How about a Browning Bar Mk3 DBM in .308 Win. Hunting semi-auto that doubles as a tactical carbine? 18.5 inch barrel and tough synthetic stock and weighs in at 7.6 lbs. Unloaded.

Noreen Firearms makes an AR platform in 30-06 called the Bad News. They have 20” (BN36) and 16” (BN36X3) versions, both available with 20 round magazines. I like the idea of an AR in 30-06 with a 16” barrel and 20 round mag. However, it’s not very practical, long-range accuracy would be questionable, and it is expensive. Still cool though….
