1930s/1940s era rescue rope throwing device -- think a shore party or ship needing to send a rescue line out to someone in the water, or to a vessel in-distress.
I can envision a few people getting nervous about this being a non-destructive device/'Curio' versus meeting the definition of dangerous-device/firearm, so here are a bunch of links anyone interested or concerned can check-out:

I obtained this back in the mid-1970s while in my early teens and living in Hong Kong. My family visited some sort of ship scrapping/junk-yard, I saw this, it looked very menacing, so of course I talked my parents into buying it for me.... Didn't know what it was, until I dug it out of a closet and researched it on-line. Had plenty of fun telling my friends it was a grenade launcher -- thankfully this was a different age & time compared to now, or-else the ATF would have raided my parents home...
It obviously would be an item of interest for a gun 'curio' and/or maritime artifact collector, or anyone who wants something that looks pretty intimidating. It has a Bakelite grip, as-opposed to the older, wooden grip style, and my belief is it is 1940s-era.
They're somewhat rare, so coming up with a fair price is somewhat difficult. I know one in similar condition went for $400 at an auction about 10 years ago. I recently consulted with an firearm curio dealer, who said It'd likely go for $375-$500 at a maritime auction on the E or W Coast.
I'm asking $300 or best (reasonable) CASH offer -- the $$ will be going towards putting UV film on the windows on my new car, so obviously I'd like to sell this ASAP. If a buyer has any concerns that it may actually be considered a firearm, etc. then at buyer's expense, I'm happy to meet-up at a local FFL & transfer it via them, but the reality is it's in the same category as a flare-gun...
If you have any questions, please PM me.
