I’m looking for a puppy for my mother who is home by herself most of the time and could use a companion

I know it’s a long shot on here but I know a lot of people here might let me know if they know some one selling one locally
I tried Craigslist and no luck .. not looking for “show” dog just a dog for a reasonable price that will work as a companion

Be sure to get a dog that suits you mother's lifestyle! As an example, if she's not very active, you wouldn't want a breed that demands that. I didn't know what active was until we got a rescue border collie pup! On the other hand, when I throw a ball for our 10 year old golden retriever, she all but says, "You threw it, you fetch it!" (That is, unless it's thrown in the water, then she's all over it!)

A rescue is the best way to go IMO.

If you can, please try a rescue, there are so many abandoned pets needing a home that its a shame to pay a breeder/pet store/etc.

OP - lots of good suggestions already.

I would add that on ALL of the sites suggested, including Craigslist where you started, that if possible you or your mother (or any family member you can farm this out to) should try to go online and check the sites several times a day.

The reason?

puppies (especially if cute and at a reasonable price) get snapped up very quickly once posted.

Went through this last year trying to find a puppy for my daughter, searched for a few months, and several times just missed out on what appeared to be a good pup for us.

Finally found one on Craigslist, literally saw the ad within minutes of posting, and was the first to contact the guy. When we went to pick up the pup two hours later, he told us he had already gotten several other responses.

this is our handsome little buddy “Toby”
4 months old when we got him 4 months ago, for a very reasonable $300 (what the seller had spent on vet costs to have all his shots and he had just been neutered)

How old is your mother if I were you I wouldn't get her a puppy they are a lot of work and clean up, you can get an adult dog that is already trained to go out side if you find a dog online you have to fill out an application form and put that dog you are interested in, they go fast we just adopted a dog
and when we got there there was a women holding the dog we wanted but they told her we were first. The first dog we wanted was adopted by her foster. You can do that to forster the dog first and if she works for your mom you are first to adopt but if there is a problem you can try another dog when someone adopts the one you are forstering it's alot to think about good luck

Well my wife and I are old and didn't want the hassles of cleaning up and having to train a puppy they are old puppies for a short time they usally give you a pretty good history of the dog likes and dislike when you adopt

Found my girl from petfinder.com from the Animal Network. Best $200 I ever spent. I definitely recommend the adoption route. I got lucky finding her at 6 months old. She’s a big dog stuck in a 10 pound body. Had all her shots and already trained.

thanks everyone for the help... decided to keep visiting the shelter for a rescue .. I will take her down there and hopefully she finds a dog that is suitable for her
I figured it gives a dog in need a home while her having a long time companion ??
