I'd have sworn that was a .38 S&W in the picture, but they are very close.

Ouch. $2 a shot: https://www.308ammo.com/REMINGTON-38-SHORT-COLT-125gr-LEAD-RN-50rd-BOX-p/r38sc.htm?asaid=as0005
Yea, that's why I was asking here.
My 70 y.o. widowed half-sister is interested in using her late father's service weapon. It's an old police issue break top revolver. Four years ago she qualified for a CCW
alcatel phone cleanout 206.jpg

but she never followed through with the fingerprinting and picture and such. She qualified with a loaned .22 and used up the last few rounds her dad's .38 short colt ammo. She likes that old 38 and has no interest or money for a new gun.
So I told her I would look around for some .38 short colt ammo for that gun but I don't want to pay $2 a round

We can make it. We'll just trim down some .38 Special brass and load an appropriate charge.

Now I'm reading the brass might get too thick if we trim that short. I'll have to try one.

I was surprised she took the ccw class.
Of course her 2 daughter's aka my niece's their husbands and a few friends took the course altogether at the CC rifle and pistol range.
It helped her feel at ease.
Most moved forward and got their CCW'S.
My sister goes with us out to the desert when we practice.
I have to find the picture of her next to her target and post it. Boy was she proud and so was I.

How close is Colt 38 short verses S&W 38 short? (38 Smith & Wesson)

I think the ammo may be 38 colt new police. The colt 38 short was civil war era.
If so, that's the same thing as a .38 S&W, with a different label.

What is the exact model of the gun in question?

I have no idea the make or model of it. .38 short colt is what her father had been shooting in the gun, and I'm just trying to get some more for her to practice with.
She remembers shooting it may be 40-45 years ago and she didn't have a problem with it then. I can find 38 short Colt on line. I just don't want to pay two bucks a round plus shipping.
