I recall the thread. The poorly spliced together image was a major red flag for me. I mean, even if he did edit the image to place the ID near the receiver, that is disingenuous since you had asked him to hold the ID next to the receiver. Seemed like a lazy attempt to trick people.
Brian2A nailed it on the head. First of probably many red flags.

So WTF happened? ??‍♂️……I mean has the OP detailed what exactly went wrong?? We have almost zero real details and off topic rants through 3 pages lol…..what is the point of the thread? And like someone said, how can you possibly let yourself get scammed? MEET UP FOR EVERY TRANSACTION TO INSPECT…..then if all is good, exchange the money….I guess I don’t see where you can let a transaction take you for a ride if you do all your homework, use good judgement and meet up to inspect.

Or, to have an in focus ID next to an In focus receiver with the serial number visible, as proof of possession as requested by a potential buyer, and what idiot would put his real ID in the picture if he was a scammer?
A stolen ID, sure, but no proof of that exists, thus far.

Agree. I have seen people post a real DL next to a firearm they are selling. You have to be a complete fool to do this. Scammers have been trying this one for years hoping to get your address. Yeah I am selling a firearm and most likely have more, here is my address lol.

Just so everyone knows, in the ad for the M1 Garand, he didn't post his CA DL, he sent that picture to a prospective buyer at the buyer's request for proof that the gun was actually in his possession, the buyer posted the picture he got and labeled the seller a scammer based on that picture alone so it seems.

The post about the seller being a scammer was deleted because that picture alone, sent only to the one potential buyer, and then posted in the ad with the words SCAMMER and, stay away, constituted thread crapping, and I probably should have banned the person who posted it for a week for thread crapping, but I didn't, that's on me also, I just deleted the post, which , by the way, without any other proof, could constitute libel.

The seller did post in the ad a valid cellphone number, which I traced to an individual with the same name as on the CA DL, and called it, and he answered, and in the ad, he offered to meet a buyer, who was in Vegas, half way between Vegas and Gardnerville to make the deal, so no money would have changed hands until the buyer got a look at the gun.

Also, the name on the drivers license is the same as the name in his e-mail address, which is a valid e-mail address.
Doesn't prove he isn't a scammer, doesn't prove he is, but if he is, he's thought of a lot of things to prove he isn't.

Look everyone. Sorry I didn't post details. It was a long day at work. Please spare me any "hey you stupid arse why did you send money to a new member without verifying yadadda. " Look, I get it.

So the guy had this B&T listed, I posted "I'll take it" without realizing it was in Gardnerville. I didn't realize the location was listed on the top of the posting, I thought it had to be clearly detailed in the actual item description.

Anyway, he says he's 7 hours away and not heading back to Vegas anytime soon. Said he's a tech for Vivant and going to school at some place there in Gardnerville.

Says he'd be happy to ship if I could send a down payment because he's totally at my mercy after it's shipped and has to trust me to send the rest.

After some conversations he said he couldn't get his Zelle to link to his card, so could I send the money through Venmo. Provided me with an account and the last 4 of the phone number for verification.

Said his name was Brandon.

Had I not been a couple of adult sodas deep at that point I would have done some more research. But, in my infinite wisdom and happy feelings I just figured I could trust the guy because this seems to be a trustworthy marketplace, and very niche.

Well, since I sent $200 via Venmo the guy has been a ghost.

Also found other posts he's made where his name is "Richard" not "Brandon".

Look, it was stupid and naive of me all the way around. AGAIN. SPARE ME ANY OF THE KEYBOARD WARRIOR SMART ASSNESS.

It was my fault. All I was trying to do was WARN YOU GUYS IN CASE YOU WERE ALSO IN A DEAL WITH THIS MOTHERLESS PRICK.

Thanks for the clarification/details; sorry you had to go through this experience, I hope something good comes out of this (finding $200 lottery ticket, etc) to make things right for you.

I’ve done the “I’ll take it” once without looking at the location. Was an awesome deal. Seller was out there near gardnerville. After accepting I didn’t read fully where the location. I ended up paying 40 over asking price to have him meet me in Hawthorne. Wasn’t a day lost tho. My son really loves military weapons/planes. So it worked out.

Well, at least you didn’t pay the entire amount up front. That would have been a REAL bummer. Still sucks to be out any money for something like this though.

Isn't venmo a service of paypal? I think you can dispute it and get your money back. Although PayPal is actually anti gun don't mention you were buying a gun or they might ban you.
