So, the big 7KW generator used to be my emergency back up power. Before that, I had an old 5 KW gas generator which got used a lot, through wildfires, floods, and drunks in cars knocking out the power poles. As soon as I got the 7kw generator, all of that stopped, and then I moved, so the 7 kw generator is like new.
Now I am running a permanently installed Generac 22kw, which will run the whole house including the AC. It is on an automatic switch. When grid power goes down, the generator starts up in 30 seconds. When the grid power is restored it switches back to the grid and shuts off the generator. It is hard plumbed into the natural gas line. It is also connected to wifi and test runs itself every 2 weeks.
If anyone is interested in this kind of set up, contact Eco Electric. They did a great job. Going on 3 years with the Generac
