I wasn’t sure where to put this, mods feel free to move it. I’m about to let a Vietnam Veteran who’s going to be homeless otherwise on the first of the month have a room in my home so he’s not on the streets. He’s lived in the same place for 20 years, some outfit from California bought the apt complex and his rent went from $700 a month to $1900 a month + additional deposits that are way up there $$$$

I want to sell you this man, he needs a long term place to rest his head. He’s 74 in good health, very nice, no drugs of any kind. Super straight, non smoker. He does like his coffee and talking on the Cb radio.

He’s going through all the channels at the VA, they are slow to respond and basically just told him there’s nothing they can do until he’s actually on the streets…..WTF ???

He has income, SS and something else. Can afford the same rent he was paying before. I don’t really have the room but I’m going to do what I can, he needs a better solution.

So I’d like to sell you this guy, price is negotiable ! If you think you can help, please pm me here.

Thanks Much,

Talk to Travis Barrick, VA attorney. The best there is in Las Vegas
He has to apply for Section 8 housing immediately. Clark County has a program to keep veterans off the streets. He will be put on a fast-track VA authorization for Section-8.
I'll PM Mr. Barricks info....

Good Morning all, T-10 days and counting before I move him in here. Thanks for your reply’s.

Coup, I’m forwarding him this info ! Got your text too. Thank you ! Also he’s done all of those things, I’m not sure because I’m not all up in his business but the VA at the very least is dragging they’re feet in this case, according to John our veteran here he started all of those processes almost 90 days ago when he first got notice of what was going on. I guess they denied him rental assistance because of the price jump, not sure.

Like2shoot, Thank you for that offer ! I will ask him, he’s a Las Vegas Native, as far as I know he did a few tours in Vietnam and came home, here to Southern Nevada and it’s all he knows. I’ll get back to you if he’s open to it.

The only other thing is moving, John Loves music, he goes back to The Beach Boys era..etc. he’s a virtual encyclopedia of that era. When I went to his apt, over 10,000 vinyl albums + more in storage, it’s the largest collection of records I’ve ever seen. It’s all going into storage. He’s got to get everything out before the first, I don’t know who’s helping him but it’s going to be a lot of work.

Thank you for your help so far !

Ok, I received a pm from another member here. I have to Say THANK YOU ! What a kind gesture and offer you are what makes this place GREAT !

Please post up if he needs a crew of us to come to help move stuff, I am sure there would be multiple volunteers if it could be done outside of work hours of most folks. Many hands makes the workload light + it’s a great opportunity to give back to someone who gave so much time / effort to us

Being older he should be able to get an extension of his current lease. Whether a month or two or more. My former biz partner went through that cramp two years ago. "We want you out in 30 days turned into 90 or 120, but partly because of health issues. Still something to look into.

Also Clark County has a program that will pay one month of your rent/lease payment per year. The program is based on income.
Dept. of Social Services will also give energy credits for your electric bill also based on income.
There are a lot of programs for Vets and low income families.......you just have to apply.
There are also numerous food banks like Four Square that give away food every week.
If you're over 60 years old you automatically qualify for $200 (per person) worth of food every month from the Senior Food Bank. If you have dependents living with you they give you even more.
Call the Just One Project for senior food which includes milk, eggs, can goods, fresh fruit and veggies.

Thank you Bonez for offering to help, it’s very kind ! I think, well as of now the Cb gang has begun moving his stuff into storage so it’s handled as far as I know. I’ll talk to him this morning to see if he’s squared away as far as that goes. The last load will be to my place but it should be a light one, bed, dresser, clothing, stuff he needs for day to day.

I sure do appreciate everyone’s help, offers to help etc. You’re all just so kind (y). Thank you.

He’s waiting to hear back from Travis, hopefully something happens there.

Like2shoot, I sent you a pm he does appreciate your offer, Thank you Again.

Gullwing, apparently there’s some of clause that states the owners can pretty much do what they want leaving tenants powerless. I don’t know the spiel but legally there’s nothing he or the other tenants can do. PAY or GTFO.

Good info there Coup ! Yep there’s numerous food banks that setup I’ve noticed on the weekends at the schools in our area, holy cow though I’ve driven passed them in the mornings, I don’t know how you find them but people sure do. The lines are hella long ! What trips me out is the vehicles in the lines, some pretty high end cars, suv’s and such….you don’t even get out of your car, pop the trunk they load you up.

So as of right now, I just need to find him a place locally for around $700 a month, locally meaning Las Vegas, North Las Vegas.

I can’t say it enough, just Thanks to all of you for helping !!!!!

The "Just One Project" is a senior food bank. They don't care how much wealth you have, it's based on your age. If you are a senior citizen you automatically qualify.

I just went to their website and they do have an income requirement which is 130% of the poverty level. For a family of two that is $26,572. I don't know how they determine your eligibility because they say all you need is a thing about proving residency.

I am sure that there are plenty of people using it that are over the income limit. If they need the food then they should get it. Perhaps there is a portion of their program that is not income based.

They are also tied in with Meals on Wheels, the only charity we give to because of what they do.

I totally agree with that 100%. What kinda sucks for me is we’ve all known for about 2 months that he was headed in this direction. I told him I had a room but figured his status as a veteran he’d find something. Well in the meantime I had an old coworker from years ago get the same thing happening to her. The wife and I talked about it, interviewed her and we gave her that room. So now I have to move out of my room so we can give it to John, the wife and I love each other dearly but sleep in separate rooms because of her working hours etc. And because of my back situation we need different beds. Ughhh I have to go back to a soft bed which is going to kill me. But it keeps him off the streets and that’s what matters so I hope we can find him something soon.

You are too kind.

I like to sleep on a sleeping pad on the floor because soft beds kill my back too. Is there enough room on the floor near her bed to put down a sleeping pad?

I have an army foam sleeping pad, and army self-inflating sleeping pad, and a Therm-A-Rest z-lite sleeping pad. These are all really good for me and the only surfaces I generally sleep on.
