You want to mod a car with high performance parts, fine. You want to drive like a dick, do it on a racetrack or out in the country somewhere away from others. Not through downtown or down the interstate where ya risk hurting or killing others.

Loud exhaust on a bike has its purpose, an obnoxious a$$hole with it does not.

Its pretty simple

Yeah...people should know better than to drive with their windows down and without hearing protection.
I agree that it sucks for what happened to you , but it was the arsehole on the bike that did it you , not the exhaust itself. People like that are the ones that ruin it for everyone else. Seems to be the Harley riders and crotch rocket guys that love to brap the throttle while standing still. They need that attention.

Having had a Basani SuperBike exhaust on my FJ100, I knew how loud it was when I got on it, so I never laid into it around other people. It was loud enough to set car alarms off if I rev'd it above 5K rpms. Out on the open road, man did it sound good , but even when passing cars I would lift as I went by so as not to startle anyone. Sucked pushing the bike 1/8 mile out of the housing development each morning going to work though. I left for work at 5am, my neighbors would lynch me if I fired that up at that time.

Much of what I have read of these laws even forbid you from modding your car FOR the track, so say you want to take your car and mod it to do midnight mayhem at the speedway (as an example) , it will forbid you from doing that, even IF you had no intention of street driving.

The law is something to the effect of altering anything from the way it came from the factory is illegal (although rarely enforced)

Including safety equipment, lighting, engine, etc

I probably should have called the cops and told them what happened though he was long gone or maybe I should have done 95mph through traffic in the Titan chasing him down and got citizens arrest-y for him blowing out my ear.

Arseholes with mayhem machines on the road as a matter of course, jacking up hearing everywhere they go all day every day.....what could possibly be done to mediate it, maybe an arsehole test before they can buy a non-muffler?

Reminds me of guys who say "everybody got their ears on" before shooting guns..what commies. Just blast away whether they are ready or not, screw em' because of rights.

So somebody was riding a motorcycle next to your ear and it popped?

Also, one of my best friends killed himself with a pistol that I had sold to him a few years prior. I'm not supporting guns being regulated.
My long-time girlfriend shot herself on my sofa after getting into a safe with my keys, My Brother was killed in an accidental shooting ....I don't support gun control either.
That has nothing to do with dangerously loud exhausts on vehicles/ motorcycles being legally operated amongst the general public.

Good arguments are being made on both sides, but the simple fact is that there ARE reasonable restrictions in life.

But those with power have one rule. Get more power. What is reasonable is not their goal.

I do not disagree. In my perspective, there are vehicle noise ordinances in place from my understanding, and I don't feel they're being enforced as often as they should.

Since local LEA aren't enforcing them effectively, does that constitute the federal government authorizing themselves to target the component manufacturers? The manufacturing of such devices is legal although the intended use by the consumer may be illegal. Just like every firearm component they're seeking to do away with.

If that's what you took from my comment, then I'd say you aren't capable of having this conversation. At no point did I say you did anything wrong lol. But that's fine. Like I said, I'm sorry about your ear. Sucks that you were in a freak accident that nobody could have predicted. I do not agree that broad reaching sweeping governmental regulations are the answer for preventing highly unlikely highly specific events from occurring.

Edited to add: Yeah, based on the comments that were posted while I am typing this, you just seem REALLY hung up on "my ear vs. everybodys freedom." Heaven forbid anything you dont like ever happens in your life with a gun. Would you support broad sweeping regulation on the 2nd amendment in that case?

The basic concept here is the Govt over reach and whether we as a society accept what they are doing.

Having seen the smog in L.A. I agree that smog is a problem. IMHO that is more to do with population density and lack of maintenance.
Performance modification is a very low percentage of the overall problem.

Kinda like bump stocks and pistol braces are extremely minor in crime statistics.

I've seen similar dissention in other hobbies.
Off road trail riding motorcycles. We are constantly losing miles of trail due to "greens" filing lawsuits with USFS & BLM. I personally have worked with USFS and officially "adopted" trails that were minor in there length. My philosophy is to not loose another damn foot of trail, regardless.

Well I don’t own any guns with arm braces, I don’t own any guns with bump stocks, I don’t own anything with a ‘high capacity’ magazine. I don’t own anything that could be construed as an ‘assault weapon.

So, none of the recently enacted or pending laws have any affect on me. I’m still totally pro gun tho, just don’t care about those laws because they don’t matter to me.

Unless you are totally pro government control, it’s absurd To support any regulation that takes away from anybody’s freedom, wether you are part of that group or not. Freedom isn’t based on what you like.

I had a conversation with a pro gun rights person recently who was going on about how vaping needs to be banned. That’s not how this works! That’s not how any of this works.
BINGO!

QFT.

Another variation of "NIMBY".

There are even members on this board, mostly older guys who don't seem to have family, that have that exact attitude.

They got theirs. And they know they won't be around long enough for "common sense gun control" to inevitably become GUN CONFISCATION. So they don't give two chits about anyone else, or future generations of Americans.

It's sad, really.

Blipped his throttle outside of my driver window and was off like a shot while my ear bled....cost a lot$$$, hurt a lot for a long time and still is very bad. But hey...he likes his loud cycle.
Wow that really sux.

Big time.

My wife has hearing issues, has to wear hearing aids and she's not even 50 - hearing loss is no joke.

I have to say I've only ever come across a handful of motorcycles that seemed to be THAT loud, like PAINFULLY loud. They were all Harleys with straight pipes. Surprised when they are that loud that cops don't pull them over and have their bike towed - same for the (a**hole) that takes all the emissions stuff off their truck and LITERALLY blows a heavy cloud of smoke every time they step on the gas - see these maybe once a month - arseholes like them make more pollution than probably several dozen regular cars, even those with mild tuning.

The vast majority of aftermarket motorcycle exhausts aren't loud enough to cause hearing damage, except with prolonged exposure, which would mean the actual rider.

A few months ago, one of those boom boom rattling rides was sitting off to the side of us at a red light. Dudes whole car was shaking and rattling...then we saw the side mirror fall off. I said " The bass dropped and so did the parts on his car ". rofl.

Yeah, my tough luck..I'm nearly half deaf. But his loud pipes are cool??
Hoping some moron on a loud bike doesn't pull to my passenger window, though. That would be nice.

See #45 above. In both instances laws were broken, laws that don't infringe upon The Constitution. Both shooters paid a price, one in court and the other dead despite my best efforts. Wondering where the right to broken windshields, burnt out headlights, exhaust that can deafen etc. is enumerated and what price was paid by the jerk-off whose POS popped my eardrum.

Everyone thinks you can drive. I may piss off some, but these High-Performance Dodge's, Mustangs handle like CRAP! Hence the reason the CHP dumped the Mustangs as Pursuit Cars! Short wheelbase and power are fun in the Rain. NOT!

Years ago, I attended Bob Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving in Phoenix. Everyone thought they could drive. LOL!

Much like the scene in Top Gun. "You're the Best of the Best, WE WILL MAKE YOU BETTER"! They DID!

There are lot's of laws on the books that are NOT enforced. As gun owners we know most of the gun laws they are proposing already exist and if enforced would accomplish most of what the ant gunners want. that's not their goal. As Mac said, it's increasing control over your life.
Regarding government raids, they are targeting the low hanging fruit and legal businesses and individuals. It's easier, more effective, and much safer to target law abiding citizens than go after the criminals. Somebody might get shot if they start going after actual criminals. As I said earlier, the tuners rolled on their customers so now the feds can target individuals for their modified vehicles. They can reduce the fine to the tuners, and make it back tenfold or more on the end users. Feds have used those tactics effectively for decades. "Roll on your boss/partner/accomplice/Trump and we'll se if we can get you a reduced sentence with the judge, or else we'll hang the whole crime on you"

I could care less. Doesn't affect me!
Typical, it doesn't affect him, so he doesn't care if it affects others. Like I said before, people like you are the problem. BTW, Many new motorcycles have catalytic convertors on them and are fuel injected, so NO aftermarket exhaust or performance tune for you! Go crawl back under your rock dude.

Crawl back under my rock? What In blue hell are you on?

New motorcycles, performance tune? Don’t recall ever saying I wanted any of that to begin with.

Clearly I have caused you a lot of butthurt and I am glad I could be such a problem to you. ;)

Seriously? Sounds like the comparison of shot gun hunters not caring about target shooters or self defense practitioners. I doubt Harley meant it that way.
