Okay so i know i may not be the most popular guy around here, but im coming here with a question of where to get started into fire/ems/rescue volunteer services here in southern nevada? Im legitimately looking to help the community, and gain experience doing it. I know we have all kinds of members here that know more about this subject. Im not asking for a hand out, just a hand pointing the right direction.
I didn’t see this post earlier, sorry for the late reply.

Most likely your first step is getting an EMT basic certificate and license. While a few small details may take you as a volunteer without a cert, your options will greatly enlarge with one. EMT basic is a one semester course.

Many places will hire you with an EMT Basic and no experience. This includes casino security and all three ambulance companies in town.

The three large fire departments in the valley usually have a hiring exam once every two or so years. Expect 10,000 peeps to be taking the test. After that if you get past the test there is the PFT, and an interview, then a psych exam if selected. Even then they will maintain a list of roughly 250 applicants for 3-4 academy classes of roughly 30 or so each. At all the local departments a paramedic cert is greatly desired and would greatly reduce the size of pool you’re competing with.

If you’re looking for somewhere to volunteer as an EMT and get experience I’d check to see if Boulder City, pahrump, Moapa, or Mesquite would take you on as a volunteer. I’d doubt if any of the other departments in the valley have volunteers that run calls - during all my time with Medicwest and in the ER I never saw a volunteer with metro CCFD, LVFR, or HFD.

I started my EMS career driving 45 miles each way to volunteer once night a week for two years.

Just apply online for the different trucking companies. They will give you paid training, get you your CDL and get ya in a truck upon completion.

Hello, I’m 23 and looking to get into a trade. I tried applying for the earn while you learn program at the local IBEW union and they weren’t accepting applications. I’m tired of being poor and not having money. Willing to do any honest trade work. Thanks!!

If you're willing to relocate, and I admit that's a tough call, call around to various IBEW Locals in medium to large metropolitan areas to see if they're accepting applications. Some Locals may only accept new applicants during various months. At the time I applied, my Local only accepted applications once a year in the spring. Once you've earned your Journeyman ticket, you're free to sign any out of work list, Book 2, anywhere in the US. I am a retired Journeyman Inside Wireman member of Local 68 in Denver. An Inside JW works residential, commercial, and industrial. I worked a bomb factory, an Air Force base, cement plant, high rise office buildings, steel mills, strip malls, parking structures, a nuke power plant, beauty salons, restaurants, hospitals, medical offices, and numerous data centers, to name a few. I've worked in Boston, northern New Jersey, south Texas, Chicagoland, Gary, IN, and of course, my home Local in Denver.

The IBEW's own website offers a list of US Locals. See Locals Search List Look for the Inside classification, click it, and search. Good Luck.

Thanks! I might be willing to relocate, being only 23 and working for a firearms manufacturer in nevada that doesn’t pay much sucks. I’m willing to do just about anything at this point to get anywhere. I’ll try calling sound in nearby states and seeing if that’s an option. I appreciate your response and thanks for the insight. I’ll definitely be looking around some more!

I know someone that might be looking for a programmer. Mainly kube with some scala and Linux. Must have clean background. Mostly work from home but must be in Vegas in the event you need to be on site for troubleshooting.

In today's, Monday 7/24/23 Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper on page 8C, the IBEW is advertising for new apprentices in two disciplines. One is for Sound and Communications and the other is for Inside Wireman. The Inside Wireman Journeyman rate is currently over $50 hr plus bennies. Apprentices start at 35% of that with regular increases throughout the apprenticeship term.

The application requirements are posted in the ads. Try this link to view the page. Review-Journal

Inside Wireman. ...
To clarify, Inside Wireman is the "normal" electrician that does just about everything commercial and residential once it gets to the on-site transformers, and all the way to the receptacles and lights. This is what you want to be if you want to be an "electrician."

You will need to provide a high school transcript showing that you took Algebra. This caused a big fiasco when I was getting in. They wouldn't accept mine because it just said things like Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. I had to go get them a Junior High transcript because they wanted to see the word "Algebra." Yes, their administration people are all union, too.

Seriously????

Aren't you an Annapolis grad? And they were hung up on high school Algebra???
This is what happens when the people making the decisions have IQ's in the sub-90 range....

Electrical theory is studded with trigonometric relationships. If a person is reasonably acquainted with algebra and a smidgen of geometry during high school and/or city college, trig is less daunting in my experience. Having a regular study buddy helped a lot through the rough spots.

Lyon County Sheriff and Lyon County Schools both have multiple openings.

Lyon County is just E of Carson City, and SE of Reno, and includes high plains/desert, as well as agricultural valley areas.

If you are seriously thinking of applying to the school district, please PM me, as there is a bonus if I "refer" you and you stay long enough.
